Brandon Goodship struck twice in the second half as Weymouth secured their first back-to-back league wins of the season with a 2–1 victory over Basingstoke at Winklebury.
The Terras forward continued his fine goalscoring form, netting his eighth and ninth goals of the campaign to earn another crucial three points in the Southern League Premier South.
Weymouth fell behind just before half-time when Robbie Gallagher capitalised on a mistake from goalkeeper Max Evans, rolling the ball into an empty net in stoppage time. However, Goodship turned the game on its head after the break with two composed finishes.
Jamie Wells named an unchanged starting XI following the 3–1 win over league leaders Walton & Hersham, although Reuben Reid and Brooklyn Genesini returned to the squad and were named on the bench after recovering from injury.
The visitors started brightly and tested Basingstoke goalkeeper Simon Grant early on, with Matty Burrows forcing a fine save in the fifth minute. Basingstoke responded in the 12th minute when Thomas Blake drove forward and struck the post with a powerful effort.
Weymouth suffered a setback when Kieran Douglas was forced off injured, with Genesini introduced from the bench. Chances were limited as the half progressed, with efforts from distance failing to trouble either goalkeeper.
Just as it looked like the sides would head into the break level, Evans’ error gifted Gallagher the opening goal, allowing the Basingstoke striker to score from close range.
Weymouth responded immediately after the restart. Burrows delivered a low cross from the right and Goodship arrived at the back post to tap home the equaliser.
With momentum on their side, the Terras pushed for a winner and were rewarded 11 minutes from time. A swift counter-attack ended with the ball at Goodship’s feet and the striker made no mistake, calmly slotting home his second goal of the afternoon.
Basingstoke substitute Joe Barough went close to a late equaliser but saw his close-range effort skim over the crossbar. Weymouth held firm to see out the win, marking Wells’ third victory in five games since taking charge.
The result lifts the Dorset club up to 16th in the table ahead of next Saturday’s derby clash against Poole Town at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
