Dorset Premier League: Dorchester and Blandford Close Gap on Cobham

Published:

The Dorset Premier League title race intensified as Dorchester Sports and Blandford United both took advantage of Cobham Sports’ weather-enforced postponement to close the gap at the top of the table.

Cobham were unable to play their scheduled fixture against Balti Sports, allowing their nearest challengers to make ground.

Blandford United continued their superb run of form, making it 15 league wins in a row with an impressive 3-0 victory away at Bournemouth Sports. The Royals were dominant from the outset, taking a two-goal lead into the break thanks to strikes from Jake Kelly and Steve Smith. Veteran forward Mark Ford wrapped up the points with a third goal in the second half.

The result keeps Blandford third in the table, while Bournemouth Sports slip to eighth following their fifth defeat of the campaign.

Dorchester Sports moved level on points with Cobham after edging past Verwood Town 1-0 at the Avenue. Substitute Owen Peart proved the difference, coming off the bench to score the match-winning goal. Cobham and Blandford both still have a game in hand.

The defeat leaves Verwood Town 15th, marking their 15th loss of the season since relegation from the Wessex League.

Swanage Town & Herston Town climbed to fourth after a convincing 4-0 win over Wimborne Town Reserves. The Swans opened the scoring with quick-fire goals from Marcus Smith and John Pritchard before Curtis Young added a third just before half-time with a superb volley from the edge of the area. Cohen Lee completed the scoring in the second half after a through ball from Brad Smith.

Gillingham continued their improved form by securing back-to-back league wins for the first time this season, beating Hamworthy Recreation Reserves 4-0. Caleb Pack netted twice, with Devon Proctor and Ryan Riglar also on target. The victory lifts the Gills to 14th, while the Rec sit 11th after conceding seven goals in their last two matches without scoring.

Poole Borough’s difficult season continued with an 18th defeat of the campaign, losing 3-1 away to Bournemouth Electric. The hosts moved up to fifth with their fourth consecutive league win. Goals from Kyle Clement, Aza Khider and Joe Flachi sealed the points, with Tolulope Adesoji replying for Borough.

Sherborne Town Reserves claimed a narrow 1-0 win away at Hamworthy United Reserves thanks to Ollie Crisp’s strike at the County Ground. Sherborne sit seventh, while the Hammers remain 12th.

Holt United’s fixture with Westland Sports was postponed due to the weather.

In the Dorset Senior Trophy, Bridport Reserves recorded a comfortable 4-1 victory over Puddletown. Goals from Harry Boulton, Taiwo Emmanuel (2) and Theo Smith secured progress for the Bees, with Neil Kellaway scoring the consolation for Puddletown.
