Harry Redknapp appointment a ‘major step forward’ for speedway

Published:

Legendary football manager Harry Redknapp’s move into the Speedway Futures Management team represents a major step forward in boosting the sport’s commercial strength and media reach, according to Premiership CEO Phil Morris.

Redknapp, 78, enjoyed a long and successful football career, making over 100 appearances for both West Ham and Bournemouth before managing the clubs. He later achieved notable success in charge of Portsmouth and Tottenham, and won widespread public affection after claiming the 2018 title of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

A long-time Poole resident, Redknapp said he frequently took his sons, Mark and Jamie, to meetings at Wimborne Road and has maintained a strong interest in the sport.

Speedway Futures Ltd, established in 2024, now holds the commercial and media rights to British Speedway and aims to secure long-term investment to grow the sport. Morris said significant progress has already been made in assembling a team with strong commercial and media credentials, as discussions continue with major global sports investment groups.

“There’s been extensive work over the last year,” Morris said. “The aim is to bring additional investment into British Speedway, and we have various potential deals in discussion which we believe can make a real difference.”

He described Redknapp’s involvement as “marvellous news,” highlighting that the appointment stemmed from a direct connection within the Futures team.

“Harry will be focusing on using his commercial and media contacts for the benefit of British Speedway and raising the sport’s profile through all his connections,” Morris added. “With over 1.4 million followers on social media, he brings a broad appeal and opens doors to new audiences.”

Redknapp, who has spent much of his career based on the South Coast, said he remains an avid viewer of speedway and is excited to help shape its future.
