Dorset Premier League: Matchday Eight Preview

Published:

The Dorset Premier League is starting to take shape, with Cobham Sports pulling clear at the top as we head into matchday eight. But with big fixtures on the horizon and plenty of movement possible across the table, this weekend could prove decisive.

Cobham’s Title Charge Faces Holt Test

Table-toppers Cobham Sports extended their lead to six points with a gritty 3–2 midweek win over Hamworthy Recreation Reserves. Still unbeaten, they now face third-placed Holt United, who are aiming to recover after a defeat to Blandford last weekend.

Victory for Cobham would further cement their dominance, but Holt know three points at home could blow the title race wide open.

Bournemouth Electric Eye Redemption Against Swanage

Second-placed Bournemouth Electric meet Swanage Town & Herston, who will be desperate to respond after last week’s 6–0 thrashing by Cobham. With only two points separating several sides in the chasing pack, a Swanage win could see them leapfrog Electric in the standings.

Dorchester Boosted by Godfrey’s Return

Dorchester Sports, currently sixth, host struggling Gillingham Town at The Avenue. Manager Ashley James will be buoyed by the return of striker Alex Godfrey, who marked his comeback from injury with a goal off the bench last weekend. His presence could give Dorchester the edge against a side still searching for form.

Champions Bournemouth Sports Host Sherborne

Last season’s champions Bournemouth Sports are climbing the table after a slow start and now sit fourth. They were held to a 2–2 draw by Westland Sports last weekend, but striker Taylor Webb continues to shine with six goals in seven games. Sports will be confident heading into their clash with Sherborne Town Reserves.

Blandford and Balti in Hot Pursuit

Blandford United are one of the form teams in the division, winning four in a row to climb to seventh with 12 points. They host Hamworthy Recreation, who suffered a morale-sapping 3–2 defeat to Cobham in midweek after leading 2–1.
Balti Sports, just one point behind in eighth, face Wimborne Town Reserves. Wimborne head into the fixture in good spirits after a 3–0 midweek Dorset Senior Trophy win against Gillingham.

Battles at the Bottom

At the lower end of the table, Westland Sports — revitalised by their draw with Bournemouth Sports — face Bridport Reserves, while Poole Borough, still without a win, welcome Verwood Town.
Elsewhere, Portland United Reserves, buoyed by their first victory of the season against Sherborne, take on Hamworthy United Reserves.
