Tobias Thomsen confirms Poole Pirates exit

Danish rider Tobias Thomsen has confirmed he will not return to the Poole Pirates in 2026, ending a successful two-year spell in which he helped the club secure five major trophies.

A popular figure at Wimborne Road, Thomsen finished the 2025 season with a 5.71 average, scoring 164+30 points from 136 rides. During his time with the Pirates, he played a key role in the club’s 2024 treble-winning campaign and this year’s league and cup double, with Poole narrowly missing out on the BSN Series to complete another treble.

Thomsen has now signed with Danish side Brovst, meaning he would be unavailable for several Wednesday fixtures — a scheduling clash that made a Poole return unworkable.

“I have now signed a UK contract but sadly it is not with Poole,” he explained. “It’s not that I don’t want to be a Pirate again — I really do — but it just isn’t possible. I want to give 100 per cent to my teams, and it wouldn’t be right to miss so many meetings. We’ve seen riders try it in the past and it doesn’t work.

“I want to thank everyone at Poole for their support over the last two seasons. The 2024 Grand Final against Oxford was the greatest moment of my speedway career, and something I’ll never forget.

“I’ll still be racing in the UK in 2026, so to all Poole fans — please don’t be strangers. Come and say hello and grab a photo when you see me. And let’s not say I’ll never return to the Pirates. You never know what might happen.”

Pirates promoter Danny Ford also paid tribute to Thomsen’s contribution: “We’ve loved working with Toby and hoped to bring him back for 2026, but with his new Danish commitments on Wednesdays, it was clear that allowing him to explore other UK options was the best solution for everyone.”
