A football match between Bridport and Ilfracombe was abandoned after Ilfracombe player Riley Malin suffered a severe leg injury.
The incident occurred 20 minutes into the Walter C Parsons South West Peninsula League fixture at Bridport’s St Mary’s ground, with Ilfracombe leading 1–0. Malin sustained a double leg break following a tackle and was taken to Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester.
Ilfracombe chairman Nick Jupp described the injury as “horrendous” and praised everyone who assisted. In a statement, he thanked Bridport FC for donating the full 50/50 prize draw winnings to Malin, and the match referee for contributing his match fee. He also commended Ilfracombe’s players for their immediate support and professionalism.
Jupp expressed gratitude to the Dorset Ambulance Service and the staff at Dorset County Hospital for their swift and expert care. He confirmed Malin will miss the remainder of the season, and said the club is fully behind him as he begins his recovery.
Bridport FC also issued a message of support, wishing Malin well and acknowledging the efforts of both teams’ players and officials in assisting emergency services. The club additionally recognised the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and its critical care responder for providing prompt specialist treatment.
