Poole Pirates retained their Championship title after a dramatic Grand Final at Glasgow, clinching victory in a decisive super heat.
Holding a 12-point advantage from the first leg at Wimborne Road, Poole looked in control early on and even led the second leg after four heats. But Glasgow mounted a determined fightback, taking heat advantages in races five, six, eight and nine to cut the aggregate gap to four points before drawing level in heat 13.
Despite the pressure, Poole held the meeting level through heats 14 and 15, sending the final to a super heat with the aggregate score tied at 90-90.
In the title-deciding race, Poole captain Zach Cook and No. 1 Richard Lawson stormed to a 7-2, securing the championship. Cook top-scored for the Pirates with 10+1, while Glasgow star Chris Harris delivered a flawless maximum from his five programmed rides in a valiant effort for the hosts.
Poole now turn their attention to Redcar as they begin their BSN Series defence, with ambitions of completing a trophy treble.
The meeting itself was a tense, back-and-forth battle. Glasgow opened strongly through Harris, though Poole responded immediately with a heat-two 4-2 led by Will Cairns. The Pirates extended their overall lead to 14 points after heat four before Glasgow rallied with consecutive heat wins.
A series of shared races kept the tension high, highlighted by Harris’s trademark outside pass in heat 10 and further strong rides from Kyle Howarth and Leon Flint as Glasgow fought to level the tie.
The aggregate scores were finally brought level in heat 13 when Harris passed Lawson on the final bends to take a 5-1 with Howarth. Cook steadied Poole with a heat-14 win before a thrilling heat 15 saw Harris once again pull off late passes to bring the meeting to a super heat.
Poole’s pairing, unchanged from the final race, made no mistake when it mattered most. Cook and Lawson out-gated Harris and Howarth and controlled the race to the flag, sealing both the super heat and the Championship title.
