It took just 14 minutes for Rasmus Højlund to make his mark at Napoli, scoring on his debut after a difficult Manchester United spell that ended with him being loaned out on deadline day.
The 22-year-old Denmark striker latched onto a clever through-ball from Leonardo Spinazzola and held off his marker before firing his shot in off the post against Fiorentina. The strike doubled Napoli’s lead after Kevin De Bruyne’s early penalty and sparked wild celebrations from teammates he had only just met following the international break.
From Struggles at Old Trafford to Fresh Start in Naples
Højlund’s goal comes as an instant response to his critics following a tough two years at Manchester United. Signed from Atalanta in 2023 for £72 million, he managed 26 goals in 95 appearances — but never consistently convinced senior figures at the club.
His situation worsened when Ruben Amorim took charge last November. The arrivals of Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha left Højlund down the pecking order, and by summer 2025 he was out of favour.
A loan to Serie A champions Napoli was agreed on deadline day, including a €44m (£38m) obligation-to-buy clause, effectively ending his United career.
Højlund: “I Come With More Experience”
Speaking before his debut, Højlund insisted he was ready to prove himself:
“I’m very excited, because it’s a team that just won the league. I know how great the fans are and I’m very happy for this opportunity.
It’s different now — I come with more experience, having played in the Premier League, Champions League and in multiple countries. I want to show myself in the best team in Italy.”
United Left to Regret?
For United, watching Højlund score so quickly in Naples may sting. Amorim’s decision to let him go was seen as brutal, but with the Dane off to a flying start in Serie A, questions may already begin about whether United acted too soon.
Alongside Højlund on the pitch was another former United man, Scott McTominay, who has flourished since moving to Italy and was named in last season’s Serie A Team of the Year after helping Napoli win the Scudetto.
For Højlund, this was more than a debut goal — it was a clear message back to Manchester United: he is far from finished.
